NEWS FROM THE TRAIL - SEPTEMBER 2004

BEHIND THE SCENES

The work that goes on behind the scenes is a large part of what makes Sierra Art Trails a success.  The event is driven by a core committee responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing the show.  The committee is in-turn supported by many generous volunteers who carry out the innumerable tasks required to get the job done.

Developing Sierra Art Trails is a year-round activity.  Key milestones include recruiting artists, sponsors, and advertisers,  building a pool of volunteers, creating and distributing the tour catalog and map, planning and hanging the Preview Exhibit, and marketing the show through direct mail, email, newspaper, radio, and the Internet.

The 2004 SAT planning committee consists of Chairpersons Jonathan Bock and Ellen Hurst, advertising chair Shirley Bailey, marketing chairs Merylyn Whited and Al Joyal, PR chair Barbara Eicker, treasurer Sonia Crespi, secretary Ginny Odell, volunteer coordinator Bob Odell, Mariposa representatives Louise Taylor and Sallie Dettra, and catalog editors Janet Houts, Jacqueline Kurtt, and Dolores Comstock.

One of the most important single elements of the show is the tour catalog, which features a listing of the artists in the show, provides information and guidelines for attending the event, and includes a map that leads visitors to the viewing locations scattered throughout the area.  The 2004 catalog is printed in glorious full color, and features cover art by El Portal artist Penny Otwell.

The project was a monumental task spearheaded by a three person catalog sub-committee, and supported by volunteers responsible for collating, binding, distributing, and ultimately selling the catalog. Janet, Jacqueline, and Dolores put in hundreds of hours to complete the task, resulting in a publication that is a work of art in itself.

Other Art Trails volunteers of note include artist and activist Joan Constable, who worked as a point person for North Fork artists, multi-talented artist Judy Derosa, photographer Kerby Smith, artists John and Norma Rogers, Mariposa watercolorist Bobby Lyden, Oakhurst painter Irina Buca, Donna Pruit who helped to compile the event's visitor mailing list, Ronna Adler and AJ Castelo, who helped watch the gallery so Jon could run around like a chicken with its head cut off,  and computer whiz and photographer Zygmond John Zee, who handles any task presented with a chuckle and a smile!  The 112 artists in the show are also supported by friends, family, galleries, and associates.  All told, the amount of human energy behind the show is truly impressive, with hundreds of individuals doing their part to bring the event to fruition, and helping to guarantee its success.
